To conclude our two-weeks about muscle cramps, my physiotherapist Luissana Ramirez and I bring you some tips on how we can treat them.

First, we must be able to identify between a normal cramp pain and an “abnormal” one, so we will take into account the following:

-Generalized pain= Normal

-Focused or punctual pain= Be careful!

The pain caused by muscle cramps MUST NOT BE FOCUSED or ASYMETRIC, meaning, you should not feel more pain on just one side, or on a muscle more than another. When this happens it is an indicator of a trigger point (which could become a tear if not treated in time), a muscle tear, or tendonitis, among other injuries.

Now, if you certainly have a cramp, there are several options that can be considered from a “therapist perspective” to reduce them:

1. Application of cold therapy. You can do this at home. You have two options, apply ice directly to the most affected areas or take a general ice water bath for 10 minutes.

2. Sports massage. For this you’ll need the help of an experienced professional who knows how to apply the correct techniques if necessary. The use of a massage in each muscle group can last from 5 to 7 minutes and can produce an analgesic effect in the affected area.

3. Pressure therapy. For this type of therapy you also need the help of a professional who has the necessary equipment to apply it. Pressure therapy helps to move the venous flow and create a more effective lymphatic drainage. Treatment can take up to 30 minutes.

Gladiators, now that you know it, the punctual pain should be revised in time by a physiotherapist so you can be given a proper diagnosis and treatment to prevent serious complications in the future. As for the cramp... Do not let them keep you from sleeping!
