For 5 months I have been focusing on giving you all advice related to sports so that you can grow as athletes, but few times I’ve told you about the importance of knowing your real state of health.

I have always believed that regardless of the type of physical activity that you do, you should give PREVENTIVE care to your body, especially if your economic activity depends on being 100% healthy. That’s why we should not wait the symptoms of the disease to start acting out.

About a month ago a Costa Rican athlete, with only 32 years of age, died in an athletic race due to a heart attack. This fact motivated me for the first time to do an in-depth study of the state of my heart through a cardiac stress test and an echocardiogram with my cardiologist Yamilah Bouzid in the Medicentro La Sabana.

Thankfully, today I can say that my heart works NORMALLY while I rest, while I exercise and in the post- workout. I do not have cardiac arrhythmias and my blood pressure is completely normal in the same 3 stages. I can happily continue to carry out the high impact exercises that I love so much with the conviction that the probability of my heart failing is minimum.

But how many of you know how your heart really is?

To motivate you to do so, I bring you some interesting data*:

-Cardiac problems are the main reason for deaths in Costa Rica (29%) and in the world (31%).

-Those who suffer from stress are 27% more likely to have a heart problem.

-For each kilo of overweight, the probability of developing diabetes increases by 9% and this can be considered as a first heart attack.

There are dozens of diseases related to heart problems, but some of the most common ones that you may ignore are:

-Arrhythmias

-Hypertension

-Heart failure

-Triglycerides

-Ischemic heart disease

By just eating properly, exercising daily and managing stress levels, we could live without heart problems. The first step is to know our current state with a professional doctor, do not let it pass and train with calm.
