Coffee is a drink that over time has managed to generate controversy. While some love it, others say it can be harmful; and despite the great variety of studies that have been carried out, there are still many myths around this drink, that has managed to be among the most consumed in the world. So I bring to you this information with the help of Nutrición Deportiva so you can get the most out of it.

Coffee is a beverage that is high in caffeine and very low in macronutrients. At a sports level it has been proven that it provides an ergogenic aid (improves muscular power) in prolonged exercises of resistance and in intense exercises of short duration.

In addition, this beverage generates a significant increase in the levels of free fatty acids in the blood that the body uses as "fuel", thus generating a saving of carbohydrates. It gives a feeling of extra energy, however its effect is usually more noticeable in people who do not consume caffeine because they do not have the same level of tolerance as a regular drinker.

One of the great advantages of coffee is that it has a low cost, so it can be accessible to the majority of the population and it is also considered as one of the most effective exercise supplements available.

The million dollar question: How much and how to take it?

Well let me tell you that the recommended dose will ALWAYS vary based on body weight, however it is around 200-400 mg daily and for athletes it is advisable to ingest it 40 or 60 minutes before training.

For supplement lovers, the market also has anhydrous caffeine products available that can be very beneficial, however my recommendation is to consult directly with your nutritionists so they can indicate, according to your health and weight, which may be the best option.

Some of the conclusions that you should draw about coffee are:

1. It is NOT harmful

2. Improves physical and mental performance

3. Reduces fatigue

4. Its abuse can cause tachycardia, insomnia, anxiety and even headache

Gladiators remember not to fall into myths and share this information with your family and friends to make the most of this great drink.
