Every person that practices any sport at some point has had to go through strong muscular cramps. Changes in exercise routines, strong workouts, and/or competitions often cause modifications of the muscle tissues that cause an annoying sense of pain. One of the manual basic techniques that are performed at a therapeutic level to accelerate recovery processes is the sports massage.

The massage consists of a set of manual maneuvers that helps to prepare the athlete's tissues for a competition, to recover them once the sports activity has concluded or to heal damaged tissues. Therefore, we can state that it is divided into 3 stages:

1. Preparatory or pre-competitive

Applying the massage before a competition facilitates the oxygenation and flexibility of the muscles. In addition, it helps releasing tensions in the athlete and improves the sport performance.

2. Recovery or post-competitive

It helps relief the muscle pain through lymphatic drainage. It also facilitates the venous return, which is essential to shorten the recovery times.

3. Maintenance

It prevents muscle injuries.

The presence of pain is normal during and after the sports massage session due to the application of techniques on injured or fatigued areas, so you should not expect a pleasant time.

It is important to establish a dialogue with the professional who applies the techniques in order to identify abnormal pains during the session.

ATTENTION GLADIATORS!

If any of you suffer from any of the following conditions or illnesses, it is preferable that you refrain from receiving sports massage, as it could worsen your condition:

-Phlebitis

-Thrombophlebitis

-Ulcers

-Neoplasia

-Febrile state

-Inflammation or infection

-Unconsolidated broken bones

Gladiators, it is extremely important that you go to a professional in physiotherapy to receive this type of massage in order to ensure the best results that this technique provides.
