If you knew how many times I've heard friends saying, "I'm sick, but it does not matter, I'm going to train to sweat this flu..."
Moreover, I assure you that you have said it, or at least thought about it.
At the professional level there are different opinions that haven’t helped to reach an agreement on whether the exercise has a positive or negative impact on the recovery of a cold, so in order to make our own conclusions we must take into account the reasons that cause the flu.
In the first place, the flu virus is acquired only through contagion, contrary to what many people believe that cold weather can cause it. The important thing is that this virus causes our body to concentrate its energies in fighting the infected cells through the immune system, reason why we often feel heaviness and tiredness when we are sick. That's our body talking to us, raising the red flags.
Talking with my good friend and GoMind’s coach Javier Gómez, we agree that the most important thing is that YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, so if you are sick and don’t want to interrupt your workouts you’ll have to look for less intense activities that complement with your workout routines. Take into account that the cold usually lasts about 5 days.
In my case, when I have a mild cold I like to emphasize in stretching and mobility routines that cause low impact on my body but complement perfectly with my sport g
oals, and I also intensify my mental training sessions. On the other hand, when the cold is more severe (when you have fever, body aches and even infection) it is better to rest so that our defenses do their job.
Remember that if you train sick you are exposing your workout partners to get the cold, so please have a little consideration with others and avoid team practices.
Gladiators remember that it is best to reduce the chances of catching a cold in order to avoid an interruption in your training routines. Try to sleep 8 hours a day and take vitamins so that you help your body to avoid getting that annoying virus.
